Bird Dress Complete! Step 2

Hello! Thanks for waiting so long to see me finish this piece. It was certainly a journey but in the end I am really happy with the results. And to think, I only had to spend 6 dollars on this piece with the lace. Money well spent in my opinion! It just goes to show you that you can revamp things that are already in your wardrobe without having to bust the bank. Anyone can do it to! For me, I like to pause. I usually get so into something that I NEED to get it done. It’s always nice to take a breather and step back because you never know what you may miss. But then on the other hand, I’m terrified of never finishing projects! It’s the perfect catch 22. Always, onto the goods.

But first!

Here is something I drew that I’m happy about 🙂 It’s a Tokyo Ghoul fan art it did. It makes me squee!

Alright alrighty, onto the important stuff.

So after taking a step back, I realized that the waist seam was far too bulky for my liking. So I ended up taking it apart to try to show you guys how to troubleshoot your way to something that works. And then I LEFT THE ROOM! That’s the key. You need to step away from your work because once I did, it was like my vision was clear and I knew where I was heading.

Do you see it? If I made the top into a crop top, and the skirt into a regular skirt, then it could be a two piece! No bulky waist seams! It would be glorious! So now that I had a vision, I had to at least make it functional, wearable, and comfortable. So, off to work.

attached lining

First I had to attach the lining to the shell fabric at the bottom, because lets face it, no one has ever heard of a lined crop top. There really isn’t a need in most cases!

found lace

I bought some lace that I liked off of etsy a little bit ago for this project so I went ahead and used it here. It was bridal lace so it is really flexible and soft. I despise itchy lace don’t you?

attached lace to top

Attaching the lace to the top here. See how close I was to running out? Man, this garment is BLESSED!

lace on top

Make sure to hand stitch the lace together here so that you don’t see the seam.

near perfect

And then what the top looks like with the lace attached! Now I have to do something about that best skirt. See, if I did a yoke, which a normal person would do in this circumstance, there would be need for a crop top. So I had to make my own waistband which isn’t too hard with some simple math. Basically I just took my clear ruler and did a chalk outline or 2 inches. 1/2″ seam allowance on both sides with a 1″ waistband. Seems perfect to me.

how to make a waist band

Now, I interfaced it here with some basic iron on all purpose interfacing. I get it in bulk and use it for everything.

From here I pinned it onto the waist of the skirt.

puttin in waistband

Ironing is key to waistbands. You basically have to finesse the fabric to do your bidding. Make sure to iron in your seam allowance, as well as ironing a bit of a curve into the waistband. Trust me, you’ll want to.

sewing on waistband

Time to sew all the way around the sucker now. You can do this one of 2 ways. YOu can sew the waistband from the outside sewing together both edges like I am doing now, or, you could sew just the outside of the waistband to the edge of the skirt, then hand stitching the inside to look nice as well. In all honesty, both are great. It’s just with this method, I didn’t want to take the time and it’s a pretty simple waistband as is.

perfect amount of lac

I decided to tie in the top and bottom with the same lace I used for the top. Can you believe my luck! JUST ENOUGH AGAIN!!

And that’s it! This is how it turned out and I must say, I am very pleased. I added some basic black lace to the bottom, still contemplating whether or not I want to dip dye it but over all I am happy with my brand new summer look 🙂 And again, only 6 dollars for the lace. I think it was a good bargain. I didn’t iron it at this point but you get the picture 🙂 Let me know what you think and what you would like to see!

Afterwards while I was playing clean up, I had to stop and pet this bad boy because belly rubs. cat rubs 2
